Fluorite – Calcium Fluoride (CaF₂)

 

Overview:

Fluorite, also known as fluorspar, is a halide mineral composed of calcium and fluorine. It crystallizes in the isometric system, most often forming cubic or octahedral crystals. Its wide range of colors—from purple and green to yellow, blue, and colorless—makes it one of the most visually striking minerals.

 

Geological Details:

 

• Chemical Formula: CaF₂

• Crystal System: Isometric (cubic habit, sometimes octahedral)

• Hardness: 4 (Mohs scale – defining mineral)

• Specific Gravity: ~3.2

• Cleavage: Four directions of perfect cleavage (unique among common minerals)

• Occurrence: Found in hydrothermal veins, fractures in limestones and dolomites, and sedimentary deposits.

 

 

Industrial Uses:

 

• Source of fluorine for hydrofluoric acid production

• Metallurgical flux in steelmaking

• Used in ceramics, enamels, and specialty glasses

• Optically clear specimens are cut for lenses in microscopes, telescopes, and cameras.

 

 

Special Note:

Fluorite gave its name to the phenomenon of fluorescence, discovered in 1852 when specimens glowed blue-violet under ultraviolet light.
